Building and Construction Pathway – Trades Course Overview

This program is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to begin your career in the construction industry and transition into an apprenticeship.

52893WA Certificate II Building and Construction (Pathway – Trades) offers three pathways – carpentry and joinery, bricklaying / blocklaying or painting and decorating. You will have the opportunity to learn the basic skills needed to get started in your trade of choice and then choose your preferred specialisation.

This course is hands-on, covering the key skills needed by employers in the construction industry. By week four, participants can select their career pathway.

Skill Hire’s Group Training Organisation (GTO) is uniquely placed to help you find a host employer for real life work placement experience.

Duration and commitment

Carpentry & Bricklaying:

Duration: 13 weeks (9 weeks face-to-face training + 150 hours (4-5 weeks) work placement.

Painting & Decorating:

11 weeks including on-campus training and on-the-job experience.

Study mode

Face-to-Face | Workplace.

Learners do some online learning and complete some assessment tasks online. Devices are provided in class.

Entry requirements

All potential participants are interviewed by Skill Hire prior to being accepted into the program. Set intake periods and maximum class numbers apply to this course. Age exemptions apply to this course. Students must be at least 15 years of age.

Students of school age will be required to obtain a Notice of Arrangement (NOA) or Exemption for permission to leave school and attend the program is required for certain birth dates. These are updated annually.

Learner resources

All learning resources, materials and laptops required for training will be supplied by Skill Hire for use during the program.

Participants will be required to wear their own steel toe capped boots and bring with them their lunch and drink.

High-visibility vests, safety glasses and hard hats will be provided by Skill Hire for the duration of training.

Participants may need to purchase Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for work placement as required by the employer.

This course is part of the Lower fees, local skills initiative allowing eligible students to access discounted course fees.

Please note that fees payable by the student will vary are different funding models are applicable for this program.

Study pathways

Learners can go on to study CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry and Joinery, CPC33020 Certificate III in Bricklaying / Blocklaying, or CPC30620 Certificate III in Painting and Decorating. All are offered by Skill Hire through an apprenticeship.
