Cain Hodson, 17, and Jeremiah Pickett, 16, from Joondalup, have found a new lease on life through Skill Hire’s TradeStart program.
After leaving mainstream schooling early, feeling overwhelmed and disengaged, these young men have discovered a pathway to success and are now thriving in their pre-apprenticeship courses.
What is TradeStart Program?
TradeStart Program, offered by Skill Hire, part of the IntoWork Group, helps individuals develop essential literacy and numeracy skills for pre-apprenticeships or other career paths. It includes hands-on activities and accredited units like the White Card and First Aid.
A New Direction: Cain’s Story
Cain Hodson, who completed Year 9, found a new direction through the program. He was one of three students out of seven to successfully complete it, standing out for his punctuality, hard work, and respect.
“I joined the program to get a stepping stone towards my career choices,” Cain said. “I wanted to become an electrician or a carpenter, and this program was perfect.”
“I learned a lot about English, identifying hazards, and writing emails,” Cain said. “The program was similar to high school in terms of knowledge, but the people were much nicer and more supportive. It felt like a community.”
Cain’s journey continued with the Pre-Apprenticeship course in Bricklaying and Carpentry. “I’ve built a toolbox and a shed,” he said. “Our teacher was so impressed that the shed is now in the workshop. It’s a great feeling to see the results of our efforts.”
From Overwhelmed to Inspired: Jeremiah’s Journey
Jeremiah Pickett, who often felt overwhelmed at high school, was referred to Skill Hire and recently completed the program, advancing to the Pre-Apprenticeship course in Bricklaying and Carpentry.
“I made new friends and gained direction,” Jeremiah said. “The program helped me set goals for my future. I really enjoyed it.”
Jeremiah learned about hazard identification, communication, and first aid. “School wasn’t the best for me,” he said. “But the program was much more supportive. The teachers and students helped each other, which made a huge difference.”
Real Growth Through the TradeStart Program
Both Cain and Jeremiah are optimistic about their futures. Cain is hoping to get his driver’s licence and start an apprenticeship. “The certificates I have now will show companies I’m committed and have the skills they need,” he said. “It’s like a badge of honour, proving I’m ready for the next step.”
Jeremiah is also looking to pursue a career as a tradie. “I want to get into an apprenticeship after the pre-apprentice course,” he said. “I would recommend the program to anyone. It will help you achieve what you really want.”
Cain’s advice to others considering the TradeStart Program is simple: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The mentors and trainers are there to support you every step of the way. They really care about your success,” he said.
Why TradeStart is Worth a Look
Skill Hire’s TradeStart program is more than just a training course, it’s a life-changer for young people who need a second chance. By offering supportive mentors, practical learning, and nationally recognised credentials, the program empowers early-school leavers to take charge of their futures.
